Duniyadari the movie

Duniyadari An Eastman Color Love Story.
(Marathi: दुनियादारी) is a 2013 Marathi movie directed by Sanjay Jadhav. This movie is about journey of
every individual which eventually makes one realize the true face of life. It has been acclaimed by Marathi audience.
Critical reception of the film is positive.

Plot:

Duniyadari

The film opens with grandma Shirin (Sai Tamhankar) with a streak of grey accompanying grandpa Pritam (Sushant Shelar) to Pune, grandchildren in tow. The story traces itself back to presumably the late 70s (nothing establishes the exact era except the bell-bottom pants on the gentlemen and the polka dotted dresses and 'Asha Parekh' salwar kameezes on the ladies). Nothing is spelt out, but each character and its relevance in the plot is carefully unveiled through the narrative which revolves around Shreyas Talwalkar (Swapnil Joshi) is thrown into college life in Pune on his mother's insistence. Under circumstances which are reminiscent of college life in the Hindi cinema of the 80s, Shreyas makes friends with DSP aka Digya (Ankush Choudhary) and his Katta gang. A do-gooder standing tall for
friendships in the face of a creepy Saai (Jitendra Joshi), Shreyas becomes the voice of reason for the rustic gang. While he finds himself attracted to Shirin but Meenu (Urmila Kanetkar) get attracted to shreyas which creates a love triangle. Shirin is a student of Medical college and sister of pritam. They are children of an MLA from Kolhapur, who hates shirin, his own daughter. Shreyas accepts Meenu's proposal out of spite for shirin(as she repeatedly turns down his advances), but is not sure about their future relationship. Saai fixes his marriage with shirin against her wish. Meenu later understands that Shreyas is deeply in love with Shirin. On Saai-Shirin's wedding day, Shreyas and his friends fight with Saai's gang and finally Shirin gets married to Shreyas. But she is aware of Shreyas is a patient of a deadly disease [probably cancer?] and has only few months of life in his hands. They are about to enter parenthood. The film ends with a great touching scene where all the friends, now in their early 50s, meet at the same katta of their college on Shreyas's birthday and express their feelings for him.

Production:

If film making is a combination of content and vision then Dreaming 24/7 is the name. Sanjay Jadhav ace cameraman of films like Dombivali Fast, Jogwa, Mumbai Meri Jaan and director of films like "Checkmate", "Ringa Ringa", "Phakta Ladh Mhana" is the man behind the production house Dreaming 24/7. What makes Duniyadari more special along with Sanjay Jadhav directing the film, is the plot inspired from one of the all time best seller's "Duniyadari" by eminent writer Late Shri Suhas Shirvalkar. Though primarily it's a story of 1970's it still remains related to the today's youth.

Duniyadari Swapnil Joshi's Dialogue

TOI Review :

Story: Friendship doesn't see the ways of the world and nor does it follow any set rules. It follows the heart and Duniyadari is all about the journey of the heart - which can be arduous, but almost always fulfilling.

Review: Set against the backdrop of the late 70s, director Sanjay Jadhav introduces us to his lead characters in a Pune college campus. Digya, (Ankush Chaudhary) and Shreyas ( Swapnil Joshi) are as separate as chalk and cheese and quite naturally start off as enemies.

While Digya is a temperamental college rowdy, Shreyas is the well behaved, calm student. However, one event sees them become the thickest of pals and they are part of a larger gang, which rules the campus. Their katta (a bench) near a tea stall is their adda, and this is where they discuss life, love and scores to be settled. This is where they realise that yaari is more important than duniyadari.

While the seeds of this friendship are blossoming beautifully, two beautiful girls enter their lives. Shireen ( Sai Tamhankar) is a medical student, who Shreyas loves and Meenu ( Urmila Kanetkar) is another student in love with Shreyas. As various twists and turns in the plot finally sees true love prevail, what Duniyadari also shows is that friends are for life and they will be there with you through thick and thin.

As a whole Sanjay Jadhav manages to pull off this friendship film with ease. Confusion, pathos, sacrifice and the mystery in love too are portrayed well and engage the audience for most of the time. However, if the number of twists were reduced, the film would be taut and more gripping.

But, making up for these little deficiencies is the peppy music and acting by all the stars. While Swapnil looks and act the cute part to the T, Ankush Chaudhary holds his own aura and has a screen presence that is truly riveting. While Sai and Urmila shine, it has to be said that in the current crop of actors, when it comes to sporting the sad, betrayed look Sai wins hands down.
